Boom, Boom, Boom, on go more lights!

So I read this at 2:30 in the morning because I can't sleep, and this is not helping, thanks Art.

Dear Mr D.,

Living around Durango you may be able to relate to this.

So I just got back from a really great town that I heard about for a long time but have never gotten to. It is a quaint little town set in the undulated hilly, canyon country of Southeast Arizona. It has a creative community that is readily apparent in the architecture, décor and types of people and businesses one finds there. It has just enough money coming into the place to allow for a unique art and music culture to thrive inexpensively, yet not so much that it has been overrun, commercialized and ruined like so many of the other small quaint western towns have been. The town is Bisbee and I couldn’t have been more surprised, elated and entertained by the place. I picture that Santa Fe once must have had a similar feel. Before it Boomed.

I wouldn’t even mention the name or location if I thought more than about two people would read this blog. Why? Because I fear for Bisbee. I fear the Boom will explode it and morph it into a tangle of rich yuppie third mansion homes and retirees that want their place in the sun and have newly cashed 401K’s to pay for it. Real estate prices in Bisbee have already gone up over 40% in the last year alone! Soon the poor artists and hippies that poured their souls into the place making it the unique town that it is will be financially shut out by soulless boring pieces of shit that simply have enough money to take over and dominate. These people will leave the large soulless dismal metropolitan areas that they helped to make soulless and dismal by working for big companies that paid big dollars and venture to new territories, more idyllic pastures, where life is slower and more enjoyable. Yet, it won’t quite be good enough when they get there. Amenities of the big city will be missed and must be provided for. We can not lower our standard of living just because we live in a small town after all. And that is where the demise begins. That soulless dismal nature that these folks thought they would shake, thought was around them and not part of them will come with them and its shadow will fall on this neat, funky little town.

And that is only the tip of the berg, the first wave. The real invasion is yet to come. I’m talking about you Baby Boomers! You are the generation that is going to sink the ship. The generation that used it all up, took and took and took without a thought about those to come after. It wasn’t enough that you got all the good music, drugs and free love. It’s not enough that LSD, Hendrix and the sexual revolution were replaced by crystal meth, hip hop and AIDS. Not enough that you will eat up all the social security, flood and cripple the stock market when you cash in your retirement accounts and drain the economy by living for fucking ever in a tax subsidized pharmaceutical daze. No, No, No – you the over inflated generation spawned in the era of post war prosperity (yup, not nearly as many of you fuckers would be around if it weren’t for all the people who suffered and died in WWII so you could be born and prosper) you will not stop with those abuses. You will descend upon and ruin in droves, as a murder of crows descends on a corn field, the last great, off the beaten path and somewhat pristine places left in the county and countries south of here. The national parks that are already over run will be swamped trying to accommodate this most entitled generation with already cut and crippled budgets. Towns that were peaceful, fun and affordable places to live for us Xers will be so fucking expensive to get by in we will be lucky to save up anything for our pathetically far off retirements. As a matter of fact fellow Xers don’t even plan to retire, plan to work till you fucking die or kill yourself, if you are a low to middle class working person there will be nothing left for you at 65 or 70 or at this rate 80 by the time Boomers relinquish the trough.

So thanks Boomer, thanks for using it all up during your working years and ruining the rest during your retirement, you are the most overconsumptive, irresponsible generation of humans ever to inhabit the earth. And Sorry Bisbee and all the other places that will be overrun and destroyed, I am glad I got to see you in your glory.
